Lady Gaga says (sorta) “Don’t Get Caught In A Bad Hotel”

In what may be the cleverest picket action ever (of course it’s in San Francisco), the Westin St. Francis (a VERY nice hotel that I had a chance to stay in some years ago) is hit with a Lady Gaga inspired protest.

Employees are fighting for health care benefits, and apparently the hotel negotiators have dug in their heels.  Stay tuned.

Homosexual Families Don’t Count

Merlin Bartz, Iowa State Senator

This man does not believe your family should be treated the same as other families.

Merlin Bartz, a state Senator in Iowa, is trying to block the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) from changing the wording of regulations regarding camping sites at state parks.   The regulations in question refer to the ability of a family group to pitch more than one tent in a campsite.  In one part of the regulations, a reference is made to “mother, father, children”.   “They’re citing the Supreme Court case and changing, you know, ‘husband and wife’ language to ’spouse,’ ” Bartz is quoted at RadioIowa. (He’s not even getting the regulation he doesn’t want changed correct!  It’s clear it’s not well functioning state campsites he’s worried about!)

Iowa’s Supreme Court ruled in April 2009 that denying same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The court overturned the Iowa Defense of Marriage Act, in effect legalizing same sex marriage.  The ruling was unanimous. As government agencies move to make their regulations reflect the law, right wing forces have tried to prevent those changes.

Even after we’ve won, we can’t relax our vigilance.  The forces of hate will still be out there, and they’ll still think we’re evil.

To some, like Senator John McCain (R-AZ), this is one of the most dangerous men in the United States military. His very presence “would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion”.
That danger, however, only exists if he is honest. If he lies, either by commission (saying he is heterosexual) or omission (hiding the truth from others who trust him with their lives), then he is perfectly acceptable as a member of the world’s most powerful military machine. If he is honest about himself, then morale is immediately destroyed, good order and discipline disappear, and his unit is no longer a cohesive whole. This, at least according to some, is why homosexuals must not be allowed to serve their country in the military.
Lt. Dan Choi is a perfect example of why that policy should be changed.

The website “For Good Reason” hosts a discussion with James Randi, a renowned skeptic and rational thinker, where Mr. Randi comes out as gay.  Now 81, Mr. Randi discusses his reasons for remaining in the closet until now, his concerns about how it may affect his work, and how his detractors may use this announcement against him.  Check it out at “For Good Reason”.

Mr. Randi’s own site, the James Randi Educational Foundation has the esteemed writer/speaker/skeptic’s own words here.

Another Republican Hypocrite Stumbles Out of His Closet

Another Republican hypocrite stumbles out of his closet…

CBS13’s report.

Roy Ashburn (R) of Bakersfield was arrested Wednesday morning for drunk driving.  Well, that’s pretty routine for the family values crowd.  They do love their booze.
The really interesting thing is the state Senator was pulled over after leaving Faces, a gay bar in Sacramento.  There was an unidentified male passenger, who was described only as “not identified as a lawmaker” in the Chevy Tahoe (way to go green, Roy) with Ashburn.  Reliably anti-gay in his Senate votes, Ashburn appears to be another “do as I say, not as I do” Republican.

You have the right to remain silent, Senator.  Too bad you didn’t take advantage of that a long time ago!

The Love That Dare Not Speak It’s Name

Proposition 22.  Proposition 8.  Ballot initiatives in Maine.  Almost anywhere there is legal recognition for our relationships, some right-wing religious nutjob is trying to destroy them.  In some places, they’re winning, at least for the moment.

But stop and think for a moment.  This is what they are fighting against:

Love.

Lord Alfred Douglas, in 1894, called it “The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name”.  Things have changed some since then, but there are still people out there that want to shove it back into silence.  Force it back into the dark corners and hidden places, remove all mention of it from public discourse.  For them, only swift and severe condemnation is acceptable.  Any other conversation about the subject is immediately labeled “promoting homosexuality”.

It has bothered me for some time why this is so.  Why the rabid response to the issue any time it comes up?  I think I’ve figured it out…

A busy night in Fresno last Saturday.  I started my evening off at Sequoia Brewery, in the Tower, listening to the folk music of Rob Cox.  Some good stuff, you should listen if you get the chance.  His stuff is available at his web site, RobCoxMusic.com.  I only got to listen to 30 minutes worth, as the
