How I spent my weekend

Well, an interesting weekend, no doubt.  Friday began my three days off pretty slowly.  In fact, I really don’t recall exactly what I did, other than be lazy and play on the computer.  Oh, wait, it’s coming back to me, now that I think about it a bit.   I watched the news, then switched over to ScyFy (damn, I hate that new name) to catch Stargate Universe, and Sanctuary.  Unfortunately, SG Universe skipped a week, so it was a repeat of last week’s Sanctuary, then the new episode.  Fun seeing Michael Shanks back on the screen, cute crack about Amanda Tapping’s hair.  More dinking around online, and some DVDs.  Watched Life Free or Die Hard. Again. Not bad.

Saturday was much more interesting.  It started off with a bang.  Or, more correctly, a crash.  I was sitting in my computer room/radio shack when I heard something nearby make a loud crashing noise.  I looked out back, thinking the fence the next door neighbor had replaced after it fell in October might have died again, but it seemed OK.  I checked out front, but couldn’t find anything, so I wrote it off to some debris settling noisily next door, where they are renovating the house.  By this time, Ted had messaged me, inviting my up to Fresno for dinner, then clubbing.  Never one to pass on a visit with Ted, I headed up that way.  Dinner at Ted and Mychal’s, some tv, and then off to the North Tower Circle in Fresno.  They had go-go boys!  The picture is not of the guys dancing that night, but it gives you an idea.  Two guys, one hispanic, one asian, both very hot.  Even a go-go girl, for the ladies.  Any straight guy would have thought she was super hot,  even I appreciated the scenery!  Met some interesting people there, they had quite the crowd.  We stayed till closing, then back to Ted’s.  It was about 2:30 when we arrived, so I expected to say goodnight and head on home, but for some reason Ted turned on the DVR, and we started watching a Criminal Minds program about FBI profilers.  About half-way through, I noticed Ted, Mychal,  and the puppies Eva and Jasmine were one big pile, all sound asleep on the couch!  Well, they had gotten me wrapped up in the program, so I just sat there watching it until it was done.  Then I woke them all up to say good bye, at almost 4am!  That’s waaaay past all of their bedtimes! Home again, and bed.  Before I went to sleep, though, my cousin, as he was getting up, asked me if I saw where the tree had fallen in the back yard.  Sooo….  THAT’s what the crash was!  I told him I’d look at it later, as I was going to bed.

Sunday, I got up early, dragged myself out of bed, actually, to get to Tulare by 2pm for a meeting of the Tulare County Atheists.  Had a nice chat with a few people.  I was expecting more of a turnout, since I had posted a blog on the Visalia Times Delta’s online site, and posted a notice on the TCA’s wordpress blog site.  Back home,  I pulled the tree off of the fence and cut some limbs off.  I took a nap, which I seldom do, and then dinner.  The rest of the evening was spent watching Oprah’s Whitehouse special, the news, then a Star Trek movie DVD and doing laundry.  Now I’m done, and going to bed!

All in all, not a bad weekend at Casa De Jimbo.

Adam has a great voice, and I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more of him!  (and he’s cute, too!)

Edit Jan 4, 2010:  The video provider added a commercial to the beginning of the video… it wasn’t there when I first posted it!

Catholic Bishop orders communion withheld

I’ve posted a blog at TulareCountyAtheists.com about Rhode Island’s Bishop Thomas Tobin and his recent order to deny communion to Representative Patrick Kennedy.  Kennedy recently voted against the Stupak amendment to the health care bill currently before Congress, and the Bishop decided that this meant Kennedy was supporting abortion in violation of the Church’s orders to Catholic politicians.  Read my blog here.

Prejean Update – Beauty Queen flubs snit attempt

Last one, I promise. (Unless something really wild comes along.)

Carrie’s latest cross to bear? Her appearance on Larry King Live didn’t go so well. Larry asked a rather vague question about her recent court settlement, and the former Miss California USA pageant winner went into a snit, telling King that his question was “inappropriate”. It would seem Miss Prejean hasn’t had any coaching in how to deflect a question she doesn’t want to answer. She’s still in the “poor little ole’ me, everyone’s picking on me just because I don’t think gays should have any rights” mode. She tried to take her microphone off and storm out, but apparently even that didn’t come off as planned. Poor little Carrie, can’t even pull off a snit correctly!

Carrie Prejean’s Merry Go Round still spinning out of control

carrie_prejean01In the latest round of the saga of poor Carrie Prejean,  a sex tape of the former Miss California USA has been introduced into the plot.    As you’ll recall, Miss Prejean became a darling of the right wing after coming in second in the Miss USA contest.  Her response to a question on same-sex marriage, not noted for it’s intelligence or delivery, even if a dearly held belief of Miss Prejean’s,  became instant fodder for the judge who asked the question, on-line gossip Perez Hilton. Quickly taken up by the religious right, who echoed her claims that she lost the Miss USA crown due to her “moral” stand on same-sex marriage,  her cause became a national sensation, portrayed as an attack on her personal “family values” beliefs.  The latest chapter in this never-ending saga now includes reports of a video of Miss Prejean in a solo performance of a sexual nature.

FRC Freaking Out Again-This Time Over Whether Gay Seniors Exist!

The Family Research Council has posted another missive of disinformation, full of falsehoods, misdirection, deliberate misstatement of facts, and continued posting of disproven and discredited research.  All in the name of God, of course.  See the FRC’s page at www.frc.org

From FRC’s Washington Update page:

For HHS, a Senior Moment

Before we entrust Secretary Kathleen Sebelius with health care reform, maybe Americans should take a closer look at how her Department spends other taxpayer dollars. Even the Washington Post called Friday’s announcement from Health and Human Services (HHS) an “eye opener,” writing that the President’s “gay outreach continues.” A $1.4 trillion deficit aside, HHS has set aside a quarter million dollars to launch the first-ever National Resource Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders.

rep_nunes090129

In his ongoing attempts to deny LGBT citizens in his district the protection of Federal law available to others,  21st District Representative Devin Nunes (R), voted against the Conference Report: H.R. 2647: National Defense Authorization Act For Fiscal Year 2010.

It’s interesting that there is no mention of this on Nunes’ official website, here. For a complete listing of votes, you can check the Govtrack website, here.

281 yes votes vs 146 no votes sent the bill onto the President, who has indicated he will sign the legislation.

Information on the current bill available on CNN’s site.

1,138 Federal Rights I Don’t Have

Many have asked about the rights and benefits that are denied to same-sex couples. Following is a summary report from the GAO of the 1,138 federal rights and benefits provided via DOMA to married couples. These rights don’t even begin to address the those granted to married couples by the state.

Defense of Marriage Act: Update to Prior Report
GAO-04-353R January 23, 2004

Summary

The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) provides definitions of “marriage” and “spouse” that are to be used in construing the meaning of a federal law and, thus, affect the interpretation of a wide variety of federal laws in which marital status is a factor. In 1997, we issued a report identifying 1,049 federal statutory provisions classified to the United States Code in which benefits, rights, and privileges are contingent on marital status or in which marital status is a factor. In preparing the 1997 report, we limited our search to laws enacted prior to September 21, 1996, the date DOMA was signed into law. Recently, Congress asked us to update our 1997 compilation. We have identified 120 statutory provisions involving marital status that were enacted between September 21, 1996, and December 31, 2003. During the same period, 31 statutory provisions involving marital status were repealed or amended in such a way as to eliminate marital status as a factor. Consequently, as of December 31, 2003, our research identified a total of 1,138 federal statutory provisions classified to the United States Code in which marital status is a factor in determining or receiving benefits, rights, and privileges.

US Capitol Rally Ignored – Fox News Hypocrites

National-Equality-March-300x300On September 12, 2009, a rally was held in Washington D.C. Tens of thousands of people attended, with the Washington D.C. Fire Department estimating crowds at 60 – 70,000.  (The National Park Service, responsible for the Capitol and National Mall grounds, does not provide crowd estimates, nor does the Washington D.C. Police Department) Right wing commentators in the media and on the Visalia Times Delta’s online forums quickly tried to inflate those numbers to  ridiculous levels of one to two million.  Relentlessly hyped by Fox News well in advance, and endlessly on the day of the event, crowds came from across the United States to protest.  Exactly what they were protesting was really never clear, and many of the protesters could not articulate more than vague soundbite slogans heard on television and talk radio.  Fox News continually chastised the “Main Stream Media” for not covering the protest march, continually asking why it was not worthy of coverage.  That commentary would end up branding Fox News hypocrites of major proportions, and I’ll get to just how in a moment.
