Jimmie Joe

Hi. I’m Jim.  I suspect you’ve figured that out already.

Some things about me, that you may or may not have wanted to know:

I’ve passed the 50 year mark.  The last few months of 49, it was freaking me out.  Once I passed the big day, it wasn’t so strange.  I don’t know if 60 will be like that, but that’s still 2 years away.

UPDATE: 11/2017 – 60 is here, and other than feeling a bit odd thinking of myself that old, it’s pretty much the same. We’ll see how it goes.

I’m gay.  That tends to color my outlook on things, but I’m neither a radical, nor a queen.

I regularly post to my community blog, Alternating Currents, at the website of the local newspaper, The Visalia Times-Delta. UPDATE: The newspaper doesn’t host the blogs anymore, but you can see the archived posts and new ones now and then at the link above.

I work as a 9-1-1 Dispatcher.  My shift is 5pm till 3am. Those are my preferred hours, as I am not a morning person.  Jim doesn’t do mornings.

UPDATE: 11/2017 – They’ve gone and changed shift schedules, and now I’m stuck on 12 hour day shifts starting at 7am. Not good. See my blogs on the subject on the main page.

UPDATE: 09/28/2020 – Retired on 08/03/2019. No more crazy day shifts. No more crazy night shifts, either!

I grew up in Visalia, graduated from Mt. Whitney High School in 1976, and have lived here most of my life.

Politically, I am a liberal, but not as far left as some seem to think.   I am not registered with any political party.  I won’t vote for a Republican, just because of what’s happened to the party itself. They first sold out to the extreme religious right, then to the Tea Baggers, and now they’ve elected Donald Trump. They’ve lost all relevance, and just haven’t figured it out yet.

I drink too much Pepsi (it’s the elixir of life)

(UPDATE: 11/2017 – I’m cutting down. Doctor’s orders).

I don’t smoke, I don’t drink alcohol, and I don’t do drugs.

My father is dead, my mother is not.

UPDATE: 11/2017 – Mom passed away last May.

I have two younger sisters, and a small horde of nieces and nephews.  (and a growing herd of great-nieces and -nephews)

I have a weird sense of humor.  I like intellectual humor, and good word play.  I don’t care for South Park (most of the time) the Simpsons (most of the time), or any “reality” show (any of the time).  Most television is a waste of time.

I like Star Trek.

Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe are my current favorite SciFi shows.  Eureka is good, and Haven is growing on me, but I’m still not sure if it has any long-term interest.  Sanctuary isn’t bad, but mostly because of the young doctor. Lately, I’ve been watching The Flash, Arrow, and of course the old stand by NCIS.

I have the complete DVD’s of Stargate Stargate SG1, the SG1 movies, and Stargate Atlantis.  I have the Star Trek movies on tape and DVD’s, but not the series themselves, which is odd.  Like most humans, I am  not always logical, despite my attempts.

Update, September 2011: Just hit 54 the other day.  So far, not too bad.  Strange observation:  I’m getting hit on by more guys in their 20’s than ever before.  I enjoy the attention, but I really don’t understand it.

Update, October 2012: A rather big milestone last month, the big double-nickle, 55.  That was a bit depressing.  The 20-somethings are still hitting on me, now and then.  Still don’t understand it.  Not complaining!

Update, November 2015: In June I was honored by the Visalia Pride Lions, with their third “Heart of a Lion” award.

On June 24, 2017, I was honored as one of two Grand Marshals at the 2017 Visalia Pride Festival, presented by The Source LGBT+ Center.

Really like your writing style. You sound like a realist who thinks for themself.
I too don’t do morning (well, with a bad grace maybe). I got rid of my TV and licence as I never watched the thing. (I’m sound-sensitive so can’t stand the noise it makes!) I watch the odd sci-fi or nature DVD instead with the mute-button to hand, just in case.
Politicians ‘don’t’ figure things out because they just don’t want to, because, like many people, they don’t like thinking and they wouldn’t get so rich. The world is run on pure arrogance. (Survival of the Most Arrogant).
Roll on Asimov’s Robots, I say!

We have so much in common, best of luck with your blogging n stuff ^.^ glad I clicked the “random blog” link and it led here.

Trying to set up a blog for my organisation and needing to plagiarise someone that knows what they are doing…

Mornings are evil! I’ve had to start wearing running shoes to work to catch my train :3

I don’t blame you for not having the ST series, there’s like a billion epsiodes..

    Dear Jimmy,

sorry to contact you via a comment but I couldn’t find an email address and I’m not on facebook. My organisation has recently made a short video for the Southwark LGBT Forum in London, and I wondered if it might be of interest for you to share with colleagues and/or the public. It’s only short and not too deep but we hope you like it:

We are also looking for people to participate in our videos and events and we’re keen to have people with different backgrounds and perspectives in our work, particularly those from outside our native London. Perhaps I could get in touch with you about this later in the year to see if you know anyone, yourself even? Feel free to forward this message on or post the video up on blogs/facebook/forums, should you feel the urge.

    Thanks,

    Joe Bell

I don’t know why did I get here? But it seemed I learned to explore blogging. Likewise, it’s because I’m a gay, I think. Have a great day ^_^
