National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior
(NSSHB)
In a study sure to put the right wing into vapor fits, the Indiana University has released a new study putting the numbers into a range that officially expands the percentages to what we already knew.
7% of women, and 8% of men identify as LGBT.
(anybody out there understand statistics? Do they add, to make the total 15%, or are they simply +/-8%?)
Update: The Advocate is adding them, saying 15%. (I always thought it was in that ball park.) But on the other hand, lots of comments on the Facebook page taking The Advocate to task for a math fail. So we’re back to 7.5%? That’s still a decent number, around 24,750,000 “out” LGBT Americans!
Oh, and teenagers aren’t getting it on as much as popular culture would have us think.
Well, OK. A minor geek, but still a geek nonetheless.
This computer died on me sometime last week. I’m not really sure when, since I didn’t notice till Friday night. Normally, it wouldn’t be a big deal to me to have a computer die (I’ve killed quite a few), but this computer is different than most. It houses not only the Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) that you see, it’s also a web server for my radio related pages, as well as my personal website. When it died, those sites went dark.
OMG!
We can’t have the very important KC6YRU.NET down and unavailable to it’s myriad fans on the interwebs! That just wouldn’t do at all. The APRS web server that I run, along with it’s feed to and from the APRS internet servers was also down, leaving me cut off from the rest of the APRS world. Or would have left me feeling cut off, had I noticed it earlier! But anyway, I rolled up my sleeves, tossed the patient onto the floor, and proceeded to perform emergency surgery. Due to an insightful before-surgery diagnosis, and after a careful transplant operation, the patient survived. Since the surgery was performed with such skill and ability, there was only a short recovery time, while the computer checked to make sure all it’s blocks and sectors had made it through the operation. Satisfied that all was well (what did it expect??) it booted right up, and is now happily shoveling electrons around hither and yon, making the interweb thingy that much more a better place to be.
The Doctor is IN.
P.S. There are a couple of parts left over. I wonder if that matters?

Saturday, October 9 · 6:00pm – 8:00pm Corner of Mooney Blvd and Walnut, Visalia CA From Brock Neeley: We have all been rocked by the recent announcements of so many young gay people who have committed suicide as a result of anti-gay bullying. I am devastated and angry, and I believe many of you are, too. National Organizations including Marriage Equality USA, the Gay Student Network, "It Gets Better," and others have joined together to call for a … Read More
Dan Savage responds to a Christian woman taking him to task about comments regarding gay children committing suicide:
I’m sorry your feelings were hurt by my comments.
No, wait. I’m not. Gay kids are dying. So let’s try to keep things in perspective: fuck your feelings.
From Slog: A Christian woman takes Dan Savage to task for his recent comments about Christians bullying gay teens, some who commit suicide. I was listening to the radio yesterday morning and I heard your interview with Beth McDonald. I have been thinking about it a lot since then and I feel compelled to share my thoughts with you. I was saddened and frustrated with your comments regarding people of faith and their perpetuation of bulling. As some … Read More
Billy Lucas, 15, of Greensburg Indiana, hanged himself.
All three of these suicides occurred this month, and were due to anti-gay bullying. Seth had endured years of harassment, both at school and at a local park. School officials at Jacobsen Middle School say they had no reports of bullying, but had placed Seth in independent study this term, after only 2 weeks of school. Police in Tehachapi say there is no law against bullying, so they cannot prosecute Seth’s tormentors. Asher and Billy were also harassed for being gay, or thought gay, and finally took their own lives.
Meanwhile, across this country, right-wing religious nutjobs continue to fight anti-bullying laws, claiming they are part of the “gay agenda”, meant to promote homosexuality. Sounding pious and self-righteous, they would prevent schools from teaching diversity, tolerance, and respect, especially if sexual orientation is mentioned. Some have even gone as far as to publicly claim that Billy Lucas was going to hell for embracing homosexuality.
I find myself wishing hell actually existed, so that there could be a special place in it reserved for these people.
Random thoughts, occasional rants, illuminating commentary, and an odd story now and then from the world of 9-1-1 dispatching. All this and more from a gay liberal atheist living in California’s Bible belt. I recently married, so MAGA beware! I’m your worst nightmare! Some names have been omitted to protect the innocent, but the guilty will be hung out to dry!
