15 Year Service Award

On Tuesday, April 20 2010, I will be recognized for 15 years employment with Tulare County.  The award will be presented at the Tulare County Board of  Supervisor’s Chambers, during their weekly meeting.  A nice certificate, a token of appreciation in the form of a nice watch, and a handshake with my Supervisor, Mr. Cox is on the agenda.

You are invited to attend, 9am in the Board’s Chambers, 2800 W. Burrel Ave., Visalia.

(Isn’t government wonderful?  My 15th anniversary was July 5, 2009! Better late than never, eh?)

The Smell of Money

Driving southbound from Fresno on Highway 99, a visitor might get the impression that the region is a mixture of light manufacturing, ag related sales and service companies, and grape vineyards.  As our friendly traveler continues down the highway, orchards of walnuts and other fruits and nuts would start making their appearance, with some of the highway fencing sporting blue signs identifying the crop.  Every few miles, a small town beckons travelers to stop for a range of services, from old style hamburger stands and 50’s era motels, to modern fast food joints and shiny new convenience stores.   In the springtime, the aroma of the surrounding fields and orchards would lead one to suppose the area an agricultural shangri-la, a wonderful place to spend time.   A little further down the road, however, and that idyllic dreamworld suddenly turns into an olfactory nightmare…

The Reaper was busy

The Grim Reaper was busy Friday night here in Tulare County.  I came to work at 5pm, and by 6:30 we’d already received 5 calls for the coroner.  Those 5 were all of natural causes, people of various ages passing away at hospitals or homes, requiring a deputy coroner respond to verify no foul play involved in the passing.  One a fetal demise, that’s always sad, and later at least one due to a traffic accident.  The tally was 7 for the day when I left at 3am.  Maybe the Reaper will take the weekend off, since he was so busy Friday.  We can only hope.

New Chairs!

After much too long, we now have some new chairs in dispatch!  Designed for a dispatch center, where furniture must be able to stand up to heavy use 24/7/365, these new chairs are a welcome addition.  Our old chairs, although promoted as heavy duty, just were not up to the task.  We had bought them locally, from a business supply company, but only companies that understand dispatch centers are really able to design equipment that can handle the demands we place on things.  These chairs look like they’ll stand up well, and are very comfortable.  The old chairs were literally a pain in my…  hips.   Thank you Tulare County!

WTF??   It’s not even winter yet, and it’s freakin’  freezing around here!  I’m a California boy…  this kind of cold is only supposed to happen up in the mountains, where it can be visited by those who find the Arctic a balmy part of the planet!  I want my summer back!

So the weekend has just started, and already things are weird.  Big storm early in the week, that blew down part of my fence.

I called the insurance company that holds my homeowner’s policy, and after my deductible, sharing with the adjoining property owner, and depreciation, they would gladly cut me a check for $10.54.  I told them “never mind”.

After the rain, fog.  Now fog is normal after rain here, but this fog was creepy.  It was warm and muggy fog, something I can’t remember ever experiencing.  It’s creeping me out big time.
