Astronomy Geek – Firing Lasers At The Stars

In an attempt to destroy the black hole at the center of the Milky Way, scientists at The Very Large Telescope in Chile fire a laser at the monster eating the galaxy!  Ok, not really.  The laser is actually used to compensate for atmospheric instability, allowing the telescope to adjust for the clearest image possible.

Some geek about the joke…  even if they were firing at the black hole, the laser light would just get sucked in like everything else.  Plus, it would take about 35,000 years for the beam to get there, assuming it didn’t spread out to nothingness well before it got anywhere near the targeted singularity.

Black holes are weird, and science is cool!

Oakland Threw Me A Birthday Party!

How’s this for a birthday bash?  Oakland’s gay community got together and decided to throw a big street party in honor of my birthday!

Such thoughtful folks!  And so many adorable men!  Even Chaka Khan was there!

Sorry about the audio, iPhones just can’t handle loud bass. Or just plain loud, for that matter.

Here are some random pictures from the day…

Yesterday’s heat.  Temps are creeping up again.  But it’s still a “dry” heat.

Oak Tree Fail

Saturday morning, 3am.  We’re walking out of the dispatch center, heading to our cars, when we hear a loud cracking noise, splintering, and a huge crash.  The oak tree in the middle of Woodland Drive lost a section of branches to gravity.  Fortunately, no one was near the tree when the limbs dropped.  I suspect we’ll soon see the removal of this tree, as the City of Visalia moves to “protect public safety” (read: limit city liability).  A tree in the middle of Demaree Road was removed a couple of years ago, and I’m certain this one will be also, now.  It’s a shame, they’re majestic trees, but paving over their root system is a death sentence, even if it takes decades to kill them.

That’s 315 degrees Kelvin

The Kelvin scale has zero degrees at absolute zero…  none of this ‘minus’ degrees nonsense! It’s about 315 degrees Kelvin at my house right now.  How’s that for hot?  But, it’s a DRY heat!  lol…   I feel sorry for those of you in humid regions.  California says “HI!”

Podcast One, A Short Test

Here’s a couple of minutes of podcast, just to test things out.  No deep insights, no sparkling wit, only a smidgen of wisdom, and certainly spur-of-the-moment whimsy. As always, your mileage may vary.

Podcast One, a bit over 2 minutes.

It’s Not That Difficult… Really, It’s NOT!

First it was the King.  The ads got creepy, and I started having problems with my order.  I left the kingdom for good after too many royal pains with my simple order.  It’s about as simple as it comes: NO CHEESE.  That’s it.  The only simpler request is to just take the default preparation.
