atheism, internet trolls, lgbtq, religion, Twitter
So that was an odd, out-of-the-blue comment on my Twitter feed recently. It was in response to posts I’d made back in November regarding the LGBT contingent in Porterville’s Veteran’s Day Parade. JewishBoy must have been trolling old commentary looking for ways to spread the good word.
Here’s how the entire conversation went:

Not my demon, apparently
Demon possessed. That’s what the ex-chaplain says. Gays have an “un-human demonic spirit” in them.
A local resident of Visalia, Sam Lukes, said we have a “diabolically twisted lifestyle” in a recent letter to the editor*.
Russian actor Ivan Okhlobystin is ready to toss us in the nearest oven. The government is not far behind, as the Duma (Russia’s Parliament) has passed into law sweeping edicts that seem to make even talking about homosexuality a crime. The 2014 Olympics are taking a hit over the crackdown.
We’ve made some impressive progress over the past few decades, and things, at least in the USA and some other progressive western nations, are getting better.
But to listen to some of these nutjobs talk, you’d think Satan himself was walking the Earth in a leather harness and spiked heels. As they describe what it is to be gay, I’m looking at myself and thinking…

Gay rights, homosexuality, religion, same sex marriage, wingnuts
I’m a frequent reader/contributor at the online forums of the local paper, the Visalia Times Delta. There’s been an ongoing “discussion” about gay rights, and a recent post about how ‘nobody cares about you being gay’ spurred me to write a rebuttal. The typical ‘if you’d just stay in the closet everybody would be happy’ bullshit was spread around again, so I fired off a salvo in reply. I’ve reposted it here after the fold. You can read the entire thread, if you wish, here.

atheism, Christianity, Facebook, family, religion
Since the age of 12, I’ve realized I was an atheist. It wasn’t very hard to figure out that what I had been told just didn’t make sense. We attended several different churches over the years, and all of them taught variations on the same story, all proclaiming, of course, that they were the one true way to “Heaven”. Over the years since I’ve been called various names for being an atheist. Some were voiced politely, some not. I long ago learned to ignore most of the comments, and only discuss the subject with people who are interested in a calm, rational, intelligent conversation.
What’s funny is the similarities and differences in reactions from people, when they find out I”m an atheist, I’m gay, or both. I had an experience just today that is kind of amusing, but sad at the same time.
