Monday, July 5, 2010. My 16th anniversary with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. I’m just wrapping up a vacation, so I didn’t have to spend it at work! I ended up spending most of it on the top of a hot, dusty hilltop in Kings County, assisting Ted install a wireless link.
I’m in full Okie mode here – funky sun hat, khaki green Tshirt from the Sheriff’s Department, and peeling paint on my old Ford pickup truck. All I need now is a can of beer! Pepsi had to do, however, since I don’t drink. And I’m not really an Okie, but it’s my family heritage. Gotta keep up the traditions as best I can, you know.
I mean, I got a Relic… 15 years service at Tulare County. A nice introduction in front of the crowd. More brass there than I’ve ever seen at one gathering! The Sheriff himself, and a bunch of the rest of them. Not there for me, of course, many of them were receiving service recognition too, but still a big crowd. SRO in the Supervisor’s Chambers.

I don’t really know a whole lot about Grandpa. I was 9 when he died, and so my memories of him are those of a child. I remember a quiet, distant man, who didn’t seem to relish the flurry of attention a small child brought to his lap. He didn’t push any of us, my cousins and I, away, but I don’t recall him going out of his way to interact with us. Perhaps he didn’t really know how to deal with children, even though he was one of six or more, and he fathered eight (or more) himself. Our family was his second marriage, which occurred on April 15, 1923. Some of my research has turned up a bit of a mystery, and I’m still working on finding out more, if I can.
So the weekend has just started, and already things are weird. Big storm early in the week, that blew down part of my fence.
I called the insurance company that holds my homeowner’s policy, and after my deductible, sharing with the adjoining property owner, and depreciation, they would gladly cut me a check for $10.54. I told them “never mind”.
After the rain, fog. Now fog is normal after rain here, but this fog was creepy. It was warm and muggy fog, something I can’t remember ever experiencing. It’s creeping me out big time.
Random thoughts, occasional rants, illuminating commentary, and an odd story now and then from the world of 9-1-1 dispatching. All this and more from a gay liberal atheist living in California’s Bible belt. I recently married, so MAGA beware! I’m your worst nightmare! Some names have been omitted to protect the innocent, but the guilty will be hung out to dry!
