Voting Pet Peeves

Thank you, California.  You told Meg and Carly they couldn’t buy an election, that out of state oil companies couldn’t scuttle anti-pollution laws, and that we’re not all potheads.  Even though I live in California’s Tea Bagger ground zero, there’s enough sane folks in Los Angeles and San Francisco to keep the state in the blue.  I do have a couple of complaints about things locally, however.

First, and least on my list… the sleeve designed to hide my ballot until it’s pulled into the machine was too short.  The top selections of each column were clearly visible.  That rather negates the whole “secret” ballot thing, doesn’t it?  I double checked, it wasn’t operator error.  The sleeve was simply too short.

Second…  Tulare County lists 73 polling sites available to those not using the mail.   34 were located in churches.   Out of 11 sites in Porterville,  8 were in churches.  One Facebook posting shows a Porterville precinct with a large cross in the room.  I mean, large…  floor to ceiling large.  And it’s not like it’s a permanent fixture that couldn’t be moved, it was a free standing decoration.  Visalia lists 25 voting sites, 16 in churches.  In the church where I voted, a picture of Jesus was hanging on the wall, appearing to peek over the back panel of the voting booth.    How can this be reconciled with the notion of the separation of church and state?  Every church used as a voting site is of the Christian faith.  Why no synagogues?    Why no Buddhist temples?   Why in churches of any kind?

Third…  Who decides where I vote?  Why was my voting site a mile from my home?  Especially when the church across the street was a voting site??  Literally.  Across the street from my home.  I can sit on my couch, open the front door, and see the church!  (actually, I suppose I should open the door first, then sit on the couch, but you know what I mean!)   But I didn’t vote there!   Not smart.

I’m going to try and get some answers out of Tulare County, after the voting and certifying is done.  I’m particularly interested in the church-state issue, and will be interested in their explanations.

Don't Ask Don't Tell Injunction Extended Indefinitely Breaking News: A three judge panel of the 9th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted 2 to 1 on Monday to indefinitely extend their stay of the lower court’s ruling which overturned the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Don’t Pursue” policy, in effect at the Department of Defense since 1994. “The public interest in enduring orderly change of this magnitude in the military — if that is what is to happen — strongly militates in favor of a stay,” Judges Diarmu … Read More

Twittering With The Movers And Shakers

It’s pretty cool to interact with people who make a difference on a national stage.  Lt. Dan Choi Tweeted that he was making an appearance on CNN, so I caught that short broadcast this morning as I was winding down my day.  A good but short segment, he spoke briefly about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the recent court actions.  After the CNN appearance, he Tweeted that he would be on CSpan, so I decided to stay up later than usual and catch that as well.  CSpan allows for a more thorough examination of subjects, and callers can ask their own questions or make comments.  I thought Lt. Choi did an excellent job, and fired off a Tweet to him after the CSpan segment.  I was surprised to see a response 10 minutes later.  With over 9,000 followers, I suspect it’s a challenge for Lt. Choi to keep up with comments, let alone answer them.

I briefly met Lt. Choi last summer when he gave a speech at UCMerced.  An interesting appearance that I enjoyed.  If you have the chance to see him somewhere, don’t miss it.

Who knows, you might even Tweet with him!

I Tweeted the President – Think He’ll See It?

This Tweet from the President generated my response.  The Department of Defense is suspending discharges under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, but the Department of Justice is appealing the Federal Court ruling striking it down.  The President has 5.6 million Twitter followers, so I’m not expecting that anyone, let alone him, ever actually reads the feed.  But I feel better, anyway.  😉

Latest Numbers In – Right Wing in Vapors

National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior
(NSSHB)

In a study sure to put the right wing into vapor fits, the Indiana University has released a new study putting the numbers into a range that officially expands the percentages to what we already knew.

7% of women, and 8% of men identify as LGBT.

(anybody out there understand statistics?  Do they add, to make the total 15%, or are they simply +/-8%?)

Update: The Advocate is adding them, saying 15%. (I always thought it was in that ball park.) But on the other hand, lots of comments on the Facebook page taking The Advocate to task for a math fail. So we’re back to 7.5%? That’s still a decent number, around 24,750,000 “out” LGBT Americans!

Oh, and teenagers aren’t getting it on as much as popular culture would have us think.
