Don’t Bring Your Pistol To A Shotgun Fight

Crazy night last night, with two shootings going down within minutes of each other.

The first one was handled by one of the cities we dispatch for, so we weren’t calling out our detectives and such, but anytime there’s an incident like this the dispatch center becomes quite active.  It’s not helpful when the reporting party is not answering your questions during the 9-1-1 call, and the shooting victim is trying to leave the scene!  Getting enough officers there to secure the scene, allow emergency medical units to roll in, and then figuring out what happened and whether or not there is a suspect to locate all make for a busy time.

It doesn’t help when ANOTHER shooting happens shortly afterwards!  At least it was at the other end of the county, so that one dispatcher wasn’t having to handle two critical incidents on one channel!

Details are sketchy at this time, but the first incident has the victim with a couple of gunshot wounds being treated.  The second is a bit more head shaking…

Initial reports suggest (and don’t quote me on this since the reality at these scenes tends to be somewhat different from what was originally reported) that someone tried to shoot up a rival gang member’s home.  With a handgun.  Rival came out shooting with a shot gun.  Guess who won?  The shotgun wielder was not the one transported to the hospital.

Hell of a night.  And on a Thursday, too.  2011 is getting off to a real bang up start.

Here Be Dragons

You know, it’s bad enough when you have to deal with the bad breath, the scorching, and the mess  (what the HELL do they eat that comes out smelling THAT bad???)…  but I SPECIFICALLY told them I was NOT going to play baby sitter to a brood of the little demons.

I explained the facts of life to them, even going as far as doing research so I wouldn’t steer them wrong, but it appears it was all for naught.

Oh, they gave me some lame excuses…  you know the ones…  about how it couldn’t happen while they were flying, or how it couldn’t happen their first time over a new continent, or how they just didn’t do such things!  Yeah.  Right.

So now I’m stuck.  And it’s no fun, either.  They won’t do as I say, they fly right in front of your face buzzing around like a giant mosquito, and a burp can end up burning the house down!  The little bastards think they’re the gods of the universe, since they can fly and breathe fire!   I try to take them down a notch now and then… I’ve told them it’s only methane, and it only works because there’s a venting error going on, but they’re having none of that.

The British accents on the big ones lend them an air of solemnity and wisdom, but I’m beginning to suspect it’s an affectation rather than an inborn trait.  The little ones sound ridiculously squeaky, and it’s a hoot to listen to them try to sound dignified and wise…  that’s just not going to work.  Especially when they start calling each other names.  Sibling rivalry runs rampant in this brood, as I suspect it does in all of them, and apparently ” fire proof ” is the vilest of invectives.  It cracks me up every time they use it on each other…  all I can hear is some little brat from London, after a hit from a helium balloon.  (Don’t tell them… they’re still a bit sensitive about their voices.  It’s something they’ll grow out of eventually, but you know kids…  later might as well be forever)

The only thing that saves their little greenish backsides is that they’re so damned cute when they’re asleep!  (Which supposedly only happens when they’re little.  The big ones claim never to sleep.  I don’t know whether to believe them or not.)

USS Enterprise Captain Sacked

Enterprise Captain sacked for inappropriate behavior, videos.

After videos recorded on the USS Enterprise in 2006 and 2007 were publicly released, the US Navy first suspended Captain Owen Honors, then today removed him from command of the aircraft carrier.

Admiral John C. Harvey Jr., commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia said “I have lost confidence in his ability to command the Enterprise”.

The videos, recorded while Honors was second-in-command, showed a “profound lack of good judgment and professionalism” said the Admiral.  The videos, designed to entertain sailors during a six- month deployment, included anti-gay slurs, simulated masturbation and two women, shown from the shoulders up, showering together.  The then-commander was involved in the making of the videos, appears in them, and approved them to be distributed on the ship.

This will effectively end the Captain’s career.  This isn’t Starfleet, or the Federation, where a captain can get away with things simply because he’s half way across the galaxy.

See the Bloomberg article, here.

Oh, and here’s the real, former, Captain of the USS Enterprise:

So yesterday, on his Facebook page, my cousin Travis said  “Rain Rain go away and come again another day!..Ready for spring and some fishing! : )”

Today, he said  “I dont think the rain heard me : ( ”

I had to remind him that today *IS* another day!  It’s all Travis’ fault!

iPhone Alarm Glitch

iPhone owners who use the alarm clock feature got a rude New Year’s surprise from Apple.  Users who set a non-repeating alarm for January 1st or 2nd will be met with silence from their device.  A glitch causes the phones to fail to alarm at the set time.   Apple put out an announcement about the problem, but many users were unaware of the issue.  Apple advises users to set a recurring alarm to cover January 1st or 2nd, and that the phone will resume expected operation January 3rd.

Twitter lit up as users around the world experienced the failure, and took to the service to vent about not being alerted at expected times.

No word at the time of this writing on whether there are more glitches waiting in our iFuture.

Some words about the New Year’s surprise here.

Random Tweet Convergence

Sometimes the random nature of Twitter produces some awesome results.  Two people I follow, who may not even be aware of each other, tweeted comments at nearly the same time today that resulted in this:

Both are actors and their random comments today made me smile.

Santa BOLO and Radio Silliness

Sometimes we get to have some fun.  Here’s our annual BOLO (be on the lookout) for Santa.  People stay up till after midnight to hear this every year, and every year it’s a bit different.

Many hours later, after a typically busy night (yep, Christmas is non-stop running from one call to the next)(did you hear the phones ringing constantly in the background?) one of the units cleared a loud music call in a slightly different than usual manner…  so I responded in kind.

We were busy from 7pm till I left at 3am. And dispatch was short handed all night long.  It’s been a long, tiring shift, and I’m ready for bed!  Then I get to get up and do it all over again tonight.
