I mean, I got a Relic… 15 years service at Tulare County. A nice introduction in front of the crowd. More brass there than I’ve ever seen at one gathering! The Sheriff himself, and a bunch of the rest of them. Not there for me, of course, many of them were receiving service recognition too, but still a big crowd. SRO in the Supervisor’s Chambers.

Personal Board of Supervisors, service award, Tulare County Leave a comment
On Tuesday, April 20 2010, I will be recognized for 15 years employment with Tulare County. The award will be presented at the Tulare County Board of Supervisor’s Chambers, during their weekly meeting. A nice certificate, a token of appreciation in the form of a nice watch, and a handshake with my Supervisor, Mr. Cox is on the agenda.
You are invited to attend, 9am in the Board’s Chambers, 2800 W. Burrel Ave., Visalia.
(Isn’t government wonderful? My 15th anniversary was July 5, 2009! Better late than never, eh?)

Brian Jacob Smith currently portrays Lt. Matthew Scott on the SyFy Channel’s Stargate: Universe series, part of SyFy Friday.
All I can say is… he’s hot! Even if the show was a complete dud (and it’s not, not by a long shot, but that’s not what this blog is about!) I’d watch it just to see him. And so you don’t suppose I’ve just gone silly over his looks, he’s a good actor as well. It will be interesting to see where the character goes in the rest of this season, and into the second, which is already in production in Vancouver, British Columbia.
A member of the Twitter generation, Smith can be followed here.
Now, some more gratuitous hotness…

Three guys I follow on Twitter or Facebook. Lt. Dan Choi, Ben Patrick Johnson, and Dennis Depew. I haven’t met any of them (yet- who knows!) but they sure are nice to look at… And from following their tweets and comments, they seem like they’re even nice guys!
UPDATE! 4/9/2010 Met Lt. Dan Choi this afternoon! He gave a great talk at UC Merced. He’s a good speaker, if you have the chance, go see him in person. And I was right, he IS a nice person, in person!

So two weeks ago Saturday, I’m enjoying a nice dinner at Ted and Mychal’s place in Fresno, when I notice a little “tickle” in my throat. I didn’t pay it much mind, sometimes I just get a little irritation, and it’s gone the next day. When I woke up Sunday, I wasn’t feeling too bad, but the tickle was still there. By Monday, it was clear I had managed to catch something, as I was feeling a bit yucky, and I was feeling some congestion in my chest. I took some cough syrup and later some sinus tablets, and figured I’d be down for a couple of days. Well, it went a bit beyond that, I ended up missing 4 days of work, and getting written up for it!

“Tulare Devil Worshipers”
That’s the search engine term that landed someone on our Tulare County Atheist’s blog site yesterday. I wrote a blog about it there, you can read it if you are so inclined. If “The Devil” is this guy, where do I sign up??

Art Linkletter had a show on television way back in the “olden days”, when programs still announced “IN LIVING COLOR!”, and he had a segment called “Children say the darnedest things”. Parents would cringe when they’re little darlings answered Art’s questions with often embarrassing yet truthful little gems. And in the era of live TV, what they said is what you got!
So today’s event is as follows: I pull into the parking stall at my favorite Subway Sandwich Shop, and get out of the car. Now, I’m no spring chicken, I know that, but it’s not like I groaned and struggled to get out of the car! The car next to me had a young man sitting in the back seat, window down, bouncing around as only a 5 year old can. As I got out of the car, he looked at me, smiled big, and almost yelled “Hi, old man!!”

I’m a frequent reader/contributor at the online forums of the local paper, the Visalia Times Delta. There’s been an ongoing “discussion” about gay rights, and a recent post about how ‘nobody cares about you being gay’ spurred me to write a rebuttal. The typical ‘if you’d just stay in the closet everybody would be happy’ bullshit was spread around again, so I fired off a salvo in reply. I’ve reposted it here after the fold. You can read the entire thread, if you wish, here.
