The things they ask us…

21 year old Robert Michelson of Farmington, Connecticut called 9-1-1 to ask if he would get in trouble for having a marijuana plant.  The 9-1-1 call can be heard at KFSN TV ABC30’s website, here.

The answer was “yes”.  He has the right to remain silent.  He should have availed himself of that right before calling 9-1-1.  Apparently Robert is not one of the brighter lights of the Farmington area.

He might have gotten away with it, if he’d only used a pre-paid or basic model cell phone.  Those can’t be traced.  He used, apparently, his wired phone at home.  We know EXACTLY where those phones are…

Think of the dumbest question someone might ask a 9-1-1 operator (other than the one Robert asked), and I can assure you someone has already asked it of a dispatcher recently.  You’ve heard about the chicken nuggets lady, I’m sure.  Or the Whopper not done his way guy.  People will call about anything.  Most do not end up in jail.

The oddest thing I’ve been asked on 9-1-1?

“When is the fog going to be turned off?”

What’s YOUR emergency??

ET Exonerated; Cow Deaths Not Work of UFOs, or Black Helicopters

The Huffington Post Travis Walter Donovan

200 cows that were found dead in Wisconsin on January 14 were not killed by aliens, black helicopters, or a cow-tipping prank gone horribly wrong.  After lab analysis of the dead animals and samples of their feed, officials are reporting that moldy sweet potatoes caused the cows to suffer from pneumonia, quickly causing their deaths.

Officials say this is not the first time sweet potato mold has killed farm animals.  While rare, it does happen from time to time.  Here‘s the Huffington Post article.

…  yeah.  That’s what they WANT you to believe!  The truth after the jump!

Update on Olbermann and MSNBC News

Well, it looks like Olbermann and MSNBC were discussing his leaving for at least a week, and maybe longer, before yesterday’s announcement.  The New York Times is reporting that the discussions were ongoing for several weeks, and that Olbermann was the only prime-time host not present at a recent luncheon event held for advertisers.

MSNBC execs may not be the complete asses that initial reporting made them out to be, and that the parting is more mutual.  We, of course, still don’t know what was going on behind the scenes, or what effect ComCast’s buyout of NBC really had on Olbermann’s status.

Still, whatever the reasons for Olbermann’s departure, it will leave a big gap in MSNBC’s lineup that no amount of program shuffling will fill.

Maybe I’ll watch more than just Rachel Maddow, after all.  We’ll see.

MSNBC Fires Keith Olbermann

I don’t know why, but today MSNBC told Keith Olbermann that today’s show was his last, as they were ending his contract.  Their press release on the matter says they wish him well in the future, but does not explain why the show was simply cut off.  No ratings numbers, no “difference of opinion” comments, nothing.  It must be difficult to come into work one morning and be told “this is it, after the show clean out your desk”.

MSNBC’s notice included this disclaimer, which immediately makes one think this is exactly what happened:

Msnbc spokesman Jeremy Gaines would say only that the acquisition of NBC Universal by Comcast, which received regulatory approval this week, had nothing to do with the decision.

I do know one thing about the time slot formerly occupied by Countdown…  I won’t be watching whatever they put in it’s place.  I’ll tune in for Rachel Maddow, but otherwise they’ve lost a viewer.

Hopefully some other network will snap Olbermann up.  If one does, I implore them not to put him on at the same time as Maddow.  That would just be mean.

USS Enterprise Captain Sacked

Enterprise Captain sacked for inappropriate behavior, videos.

After videos recorded on the USS Enterprise in 2006 and 2007 were publicly released, the US Navy first suspended Captain Owen Honors, then today removed him from command of the aircraft carrier.

Admiral John C. Harvey Jr., commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia said “I have lost confidence in his ability to command the Enterprise”.

The videos, recorded while Honors was second-in-command, showed a “profound lack of good judgment and professionalism” said the Admiral.  The videos, designed to entertain sailors during a six- month deployment, included anti-gay slurs, simulated masturbation and two women, shown from the shoulders up, showering together.  The then-commander was involved in the making of the videos, appears in them, and approved them to be distributed on the ship.

This will effectively end the Captain’s career.  This isn’t Starfleet, or the Federation, where a captain can get away with things simply because he’s half way across the galaxy.

See the Bloomberg article, here.

Oh, and here’s the real, former, Captain of the USS Enterprise:
