Wise Words From A Wise Man

Wesley (Wil Wheaton) and Scotty (Simon Pegg) have plans for the Enterprise D

I love it when creative people get creative right in front of me.  It’s fun to watch, and sometimes you can learn something.

Read this exchange between Wheaton and Pegg from the bottom up.

LLAP – Nimoy has done both

Now it’s Leonard Nimoy’s turn.  “Spock” is 81 today.

Spock was a major influence on my teenage years.  The rational, intelligent outsider, whose presence was always required to save the day, helped me get through times when I thought I might not.  His quest for knowledge, his acceptance of what was,  his ability to suppress emotions so they would not overwhelm, served as a role model for me.  Perhaps not the best role model for a real human being, but one that helped me immensely.

And a couple of episodes where he got his shirt off didn’t hurt, either!  (Shatner’s constant “shirt on-shirt off” didn’t have the same effect, for some reason)

Happy Birthday, Mr. Nimoy.

Live long, and prosper.

Shat’s almost 81?? Say it… ain’t.. SO!

William Shatner,  AKA Captain James T. Kirk (and to some younger fans, T.J. Hooker, and for the *really* young ones, Denny Crane) will turn 81 on March 22, 2012.

First, it’s difficult to think of Captain Kirk being that old, and second, he’s held up pretty well!  He’s had some rough times in his life, but looks remarkably hale and hearty.  Even if he’s had some “work” done, and I don’t know that he has, he’s a great example of how to age gracefully, with style and humor.  I really liked his Priceline commercials, and it’s sad to see his participation in those end, but the industry always moves on.  I think it’s important not to take yourself too seriously, and be able to have fun with your own image.  Shatner has done that, and it speaks to his being a classy man.  He has had a reputation of being a difficult person to be around, especially professionally, and there are apparently plenty of hard feelings towards him from his fellow actors through the years.  He may be/may have been a jerk to know personally or as an actor to work with, but it’s his public personae I’m talking about here.  His public image is genial and friendly.  It would be nice to think he’s that way in his private life, but you never know.  He is, after all, an actor.   Regardless, I think he’s done well since his Star Trek days, and I wish him continued success (and personal growth even at 81!) in the years ahead.

Ahead, warp factor 2, Mr. Sulu.

Holmes and the Doctor – jees, guys, get a room!

What Dreams May Come…

Meet Ted.

I’ve known him for about 16 years now, and a better friend nobody could want or have.

A hottie, yes?

Well, the other day I had a dream about him.

Not so much about *him*, but he’s the reason for the subject matter of this particular dream.

Before I met him, I had a smidgen of computer smarts, hardly enough to even call them that, but a bit.  I’ve learned a lot since then, and 99.9% of it from Ted.  I’m sure he’s had to bite his tongue a time or two, and probably wonders why it takes so much repetition for me to finally learn something so simple!  But after 16 years of his expert tutoring, I’m actually seen by others (folks at work, family, a few other friends) as being a computer geek who they can turn to if they need computer help.  Generally, I can help them, and not blow up their machines in the process.  If I don’t know the answer to what are usually fairly simple issues, I can refer them to someone who can.

The dream?  I only remember a bit of it.  (I’m not one who wakes up with a clear memory of my dreams) It did have to do with sliding something in and out.

Say Huh?

Today’s experience with my iPhone demonstrates that I am losing the ability to hear certain tones/pitches. I was shaving, with an electric razor (buzzing noise inches from my ears) when my phone rang. I was in the bathroom, and the phone on a table next to my bed in the next room. The ringer volume was set to maximum, but I did not hear the ring. I did, however, hear the phone vibrating as it lay on the table.
I thought it was a bit odd, that I completely missed the ring-tone, but could hear the vibrating noise well enough to turn off the shaver to see where that odd buzzing was coming from.
The moral of the story? If you call me, and I don’t answer, be sure and leave a voicemail! I might simply have not heard the phone!

Time Marches On

I dug out an old picture of my sister and I, and paired it up with one I took of us the other day.  I suppose you could say bookends for the past half-century.  I can remember the photo shoot on the left, and in years to come, I’ll probably remember it better than the latest one!

Angels, Devils, and Dr. Pepper

I was driving down the street this afternoon, heading to Quizno’s for another of their fantastic salads, when I passed a trio of boys trying to attract the attention of passing motorists.  They were all about 12 years old, and one held up a sign that said “Dr. Pepper $1.00”.  They waved and yelled as I drove past, trying to get me to stop.  I don’t particularly care for Dr. Pepper, and I already had a 44 ounce Pepsi sitting next to me, so I drove on.  I thought about holding up my big cup as I drove by, but the moment passed before I could manage it safely.

That’s when the angel appeared.

Moon watching 2012

Apollo 17 / NASA

The Moon.  It’s a real place.  A world of it’s own, that hangs in our sky.  It may be the very reason life exists on this planet.  Formed when a planet the size of Mars collided with the (then smaller-than-now) Earth, the results of that chaos formed the (more-properly designated) double-planet system we see today.  We often talk about the Moon orbiting the Earth, but it doesn’t, not really.  The Earth and the Moon both orbit around a common center of gravity.  That center is some miles below the surface of the Earth, but it is not the center of the Earth.  The Moon is considered the largest satellite (even though it’s not, not really) of a planet, relative to the primary’s size, in our solar system, with the possible exception of Pluto/Charon.  Now that Pluto has been downgraded from planet status, the Moon may hold that title without challenge.

I took my telescope out into the back yard tonight, and had a look-see.
