“Thou Shalt Not Lie”

Former Arkansas Governor,  Southern Baptist minister, and potential 2012 Presidential candidate  Mike Huckabee recently fueled the “birther” lies that President Obama was not born in the United States, and is ineligible to be President.  In an interview with New York radio station WOR, Huckabee said  “One thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, (is) very different than the average American,” pointing to Obama’s decision in 2009 to return a bust of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill.  He failed to note that the bust was only on loan to the United States, sent to former President Bush by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair after the 9/11 attacks, and was replaced by President Obama with one of Abraham Lincoln.

Barack Obama did not visit Kenya until he was 26 years old, and only visited his sister there for one month.

ABC30 News posted an article from the Associated Press that says in part:

Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961 to a mother from Kansas, and a father from Kenya whom he would barely know. He spent the first five years of his life in Hawaii and then moved with his since-divorced mother and her new husband to Indonesia. At the age of 10, he returned to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents on Oahu until he started his undergraduate degree in Los Angeles and completed it in New York City.

“The first time I came to Kenya was in 1987,” Obama said at the University of Nairobi in 2006. “I had just finished three years of work as a community organizer in low-income neighborhoods of Chicago, and was about to enroll in law school. My sister, Auma, was teaching that year at this university, and so I came to stay with her for a month.”

The facts seem to be a convenience to many on the right, especially if they are running for President.  They are easily forgotten or ignored, and the candidates seem quite happy to contradict even themselves to serve up to various audiences what they think they want to hear.

Huckabee knows there is nothing to the birther claims, he even says so a moment later in the same interview:

“The only reason I’m not as confident that there’s something about the birth certificate  is because I know the Clintons and believe me, they have lots of investigators out on him, and I’m convinced if there was anything that they could have found on that, they would have found it, and I promise they would have used it,” Huckabee said.

So Huckabee knows the President was born in Hawaii. He should know he didn’t visit Kenya until his 20’s.  If he honestly believes the President grew up in Kenya, then he’s seriously misinformed, and should not be President just based on his lack of general knowledge.  After all, *I* know where President Obama grew up, and I’m *not* running for anything.

Either Huckabee is seriously ignorant on an issue he’s speaking about frequently, or he’s deliberately lying.  I know which I think it is.  If he’s elected President one day, then “God” help us all.  George Bush was just a dim bulb.  This guy is bright, and a liar.  That’s a dangerous combination.
