Spur-of-the-moment leads to fun weekend

Friday morning (well, just after noon, but way morning for me), as I’m in that kinda-asleep-but-kinda-not condition that you get to experience if you don’t wake up to an alarm clock, I heard the text-message chime go off on my phone.  At first, I try to ignore it, after all, I’m still “asleep”, but my curiosity got the best of me, and I pick up the phone to see what was up.  Ted sent me a message, saying  “pack your bags ur going to bass lake for the weekend!!!!!!”.  Well…  you can’t argue with something like that, so I started packing.

Here are some pictures and details of the weekend.

Pool Party

This was the setting for the Men’s Mixer Pool Party.  A good turnout of folks hanging out in and around the pool at Todd’s place.  Fantastic setting, good people, and we even got the police called on us!  (turns out a neighbor really doesn’t like the queers in the neighborhood and takes every opportunity to make that fact known)

Thanks for hosting, Todd.  Great backyard!

What’s up with that??

Did she just call me a faggot? (via Queer Visalia)

Did she just call me a faggot? I think I might have been gay-bashed, verbally at least, this afternoon.  It’s a bit odd, and I’m not sure that it actually happened. I’ve been pretty lucky, as far as gay-bashing goes.  I’ve never been the victim of any kind of physical assault, and the last time I can recall being verbally harassed was in high school (and that was 35 or so years ago!).  Back then, it was simply the worst thing one teenage boy could say to the other, and it was … Read More

Here’s Ted and I at the front lobby of the Cow Palace, waiting for the opening ceremonies to begin.  Can you tell we’re both running on almost no sleep?  Huge crowd, I’ll have some videos later of the riderless bike, and the start of the ride.

The Ride To End Aids

Ted Freitas

I recently published an interview, on QueerFresno and QueerLandia, with Ted Freitas on his upcoming participation in the 10th annual AIDS/Life Cycle, The  Ride To End Aids.

The ride begins this weekend in San Francisco, and ends the following Saturday in Los Angeles.  535 miles.  Ted will be live-tweeting the ride as much as possible, and you can follow him on Twitter, @tedfreitas, and read more on his blog, My Rebooted Life.

I’ll also be doing some posting on the blog myself, and I hope to link up with Ted and the riders Wednesday evening in Paso Robles.

Look for my posts at Ted’s site, My Rebooted Life, http://myrebootedlife.com, my Twitter feed @kc6yru, and here at JimmieJoe.com.

Harvey Milk Day Commentary

Here’s the text of my Guest Commentary in the Visalia Times Delta of May 20, 2011.

“My name is Harvey Milk, and I’m here to recruit you.”

Making this statement during public appearances, Harvey Milk was recruiting people to come out of the closet. He felt this action was the most important thing people in the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community could do to ensure their civil rights. If more people were aware of the gay associates, friends, family and loved ones around them, it would become impossible for most of them to continue past habits of discrimination.

Sunday, May 22, is the second annual California Harvey Milk Day. It’s a day to remind all Californians of the ability of one person to make a difference.
